A flashlight may be one of the most underappreciated devices in the world. Think about everything a flashlight does for people. It allows us to look into the darkest caverns of our house when we lose something small. It also allows us to see when the lights go out.

All flashlights are small and easy to carry. However, they come in different sizes and with different capabilities. In fact, some flashlights are made to fit on a key ring. This is helpful because sometimes drivers are outside of their car, in the pitch black of night, fumbling for the correct key for their car. This could quickly turn into an issue of security. But with a small flashlight that fits on a key chain, the key can be found quickly and the driver can get safely into his / her car.

Another safety issue arises when people lose electricity. A completely dark house can quickly become an obstacle course when visibility is lost. Any number of objects – couches, chairs, children’s toys, stairs, etc. – can turn into hazards that can be tripped over. The problem becomes even bigger for older people who could be easily injured from a fall.

Every house should have at least one flashlight. The flashlight should be in a place where it can be easily found and reached. No one wants to grope around in the dark to find where the flashlights might be. The entire purpose would be defeated. There should also be multiple flashlights placed throughout the home. Then wherever people might be when the lights go out, a flashlight will be easy to find and retrieve.

There are a variety of flashlights that can be purchased. They can be quite large or very small. Some require batteries while others do not. Some are very lightweight while others are heavy. There are even flashlights that have lens that can be placed over the light. This will stop the light from being seen from a distance. The military (especially the Army) has very cool flashlights that they give to their troops. The lights can actually be adjusted so that a wide space of land is illuminated or so that just a tiny spot is lit – up.

A flashlight is underappreciated in society. We never know how great they are until we absolutely need them. The most common uses for flashlights are: to help us see when the lights go out, to help us see when we are outside at night (including taking a walk or camping, and to help us look for something where there isn’t sufficient light.
